Take Your Time, Little Island Girl

Comment on this article

Songs can come from the most innocent of conversations.

The origins of my songs are not always obvious, even to me, but sometimes it is so straightforward that it is like, well, duh!

I have a friend who is spending the summer season working on an island. This is not some huge career path, though you never know, but, I suspect, a need to get away from a cyclical life. She was having fun, but getting stuck.

I can't remember which song she heard, but she suggested I write a song about a girl on an island. She probably didn't mean it to be about her, and it isn't completely, but, well, the inspiration was sitting there on the other end of Messenger, so why not?

The little group of fans on ReverbNation seem to like it, and I am rather fond of it.

The lead instrument is a descant recorder. Not usual, I admit, but it had just the right sound. Made me feel like a little kid again playing it.

Listen to it on ReverbNation, and don't forget to become a fan on there and say lovely things about me - it all helps!

Lyrics

Sitting on a beach
Little island girl
Tell us your thoughts
From your other world

Sun is shining
In your eyes so bright
What will you do
In the lonely nights?

It's a hard thing,
when the world is young
To turn your back
On the tired fun

To say goodbye
To those endless routines
Of drink and dance
Language obscene

The friends you hated
You now want to kiss
But if you turn back
It’s your new life you'll miss

Take your time little Island girl
Toss a dime little island girl
Watch the sky little island girl
Learn to love little island girl.

Light a fire little island girl
All you desire little island girl
Dance in your dreams little island girl
Life is waiting little island girl

Verse 2

On harbour walls
You watch them all
Bring in the fish
From the night-time trawl

Sea gulls singing
For their breakfast share
On the wing
Without a care

When the night comes
On the island sands
Let the water flow
Through your empty hands

Think of those
Who you left behind
They're wishing you
All the luck you can find

If life seems empty
And fills you with dread
Soon you'll be dancing
With the stars around your head

Take your time little Island girl
Toss a dime little island girl
Watch the sky little island girl
Learn to love little island girl.

Light a fire little island girl
All you desire little island girl
Dance in your dreams little island girl
Life is waiting little island girl

I hear you laughing little island girl
Watch you playing little island girl
Keep on smiling little island girl
Keep on loving little island girl

Maybe tomorrow little island girl
They'll be no sorrow little island girl
You'll find your rainbow little island girl
Across the bay little island girl
